My grandma makes this rice if someone at home feels sick of stomach pain or diarrhea and also to ease the digestion and cool the body. She slightly mashes the rice using spatula and adds it with the sauteed onion. But I am a great fan it, I prepare it often without mashing and sometimes enjoy it with a dollop of ghee.
Use only small onions for preparing this rice. I tried it once with red onions but I find there was a change in taste. Also, make sure to use only gingelly oil (sesame oil) for preparing this rice. It tastes good only when it is prepared with hot steamed rice.
